The OPSS website hosts the official “DoD Prohibited Dietary Supplement Ingredients list.” It states that the list will be updated when an FDA action occurs or new scientific information becomes available regarding dietary supplement ingredients. Service Members are not allowed to use any product with an ingredient on the DoD Prohibited Dietary Supplement Ingredients list.

The policy applies to “OSD, the Military Departments, the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Joint Staff, the Combatant Commands, Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Defense, the Defense Agencies, the DoD Field Activities, and all other organizational entities within the DoD.”

No retail facility on a military installation can sell products containing ingredients on the DoD Prohibited Dietary Supplement Ingredients list on the OPSS website.”

Dietary supplement education is required for all Service Members and those who provide health-related services to the military. This includes healthcare personnel, health promotion specialists, fitness leaders, athletic trainers, and strength-and-conditioning specialists.

The DoDI also requires DoD healthcare providers to document the use of all dietary supplements in the user’s Electronic Health Record. In addition, they must report “suspected serious adverse events resulting from use of dietary supplements” both via the adverse events page of the OPSS website and in the user’s Electronic Health Record.

The new DoD Prohibited Dietary Supplement Ingredients list (also referred to here and elsewhere on the OPSS website as the “DoD Prohibited List”) has been prepared in accordance with the section of DoDI 6130.06 titled “Conditions of use for dietary supplements.” It includes controlled substances, other substances on the World Anti-Doping Agency list (sections S0 through S5), and many drugs that have been found in dietary supplements.

The OPSS Dietary Supplement Ingredients Prohibited by the Department of Defense list includes more than 800 substances. Each is accompanied by a list of various terms that might appear on a dietary supplement label to identify the prohibited substance.
